MARYBETH SHAW
principal + art directorIn January 2004, Marybeth founded Shaw-Jelveh Design in order to broaden the content of her work and apply her expertise to organizations seeking transformation by design. She is an enthusiastic proponent of design excellence as a key component to good business and good society. Shaw Jelveh Design has helped over 50 private and non-profit clients improve their image and increase their revenues through Marybeth’s “branding by design” strategies.
Prior to founding Shaw-Jelveh Design, Marybeth enhanced all aspects of Wolf-Gordon’s branding and communications, from graphics and advertising to presentation tools and showroom design. Under her creative direction, the Wolf-Gordon brand rose dramatically as she launched a licensed design program that showcased the most innovative designs seen in commercial wallcovering in decades.
Marybeth has also worked for Ehrenkrantz, Eckstut & Kuhn Architects, Richard Meier & Partners, Architects, Formica Corporation and the Architectural League of New York. She holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture from the Ecole d’Architecture de Paris-Belleville, a Master’s Degree in City Planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Government from Smith College.
Marybeth is a LEED Accredited Professional in Interior Design + Construction, a member of the Architectural League of New York, the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers, The U.S. Green Building Council and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. She is a chairholder and recent design chair of the Color Marketing Group. She holds three U.S. design patents for product design.
In addition to working with her clients, Marybeth enjoys helping young designers gain professional experience as interns in her studio. She is a francophile and francophone, loves architectural tourism, skiing and hanging out with her family.
MAJID JELVEH
principalMajid Jelveh, AIA, LEED AP, registered in the States of New York and Maryland, provides Shaw-Jelveh Design with over 25 years of professional experience in architecture, urban design and project management. In addition to participating in certain Shaw Jelveh Design projects, Majid is the sole proprietor of Green Plaque, LLC, the USGBC’s supplier of LEED certification plaques, hardware and accessories.
Majid’s designs transform programmatic requirements and perceived constraints into well-articulated expressions of material, form and function. His understanding of new building technologies and how they are integrated in Modern architecture stems from years of managing the construction of a variety of highest quality building programs: hospitals at Rockefeller University and the University of Maryland Medical Center, a daycare center, pedestrian bridge and outdoor plaza at Rockefeller University, the SUNY School of Optometry in NYC, and numerous office, academic and residential buildings in the New York metropolitan region.
In 1998, Majid won first prize, with Christian Joiris, in the Van Alen Institute’s international design competition for Pier 40, New York City. The scheme was subsequently advanced and endorsed by Community Board 2 of Manhattan as the project of choice for the site.
Majid has worked for the Office of Planning and Construction at Rockefeller University, NYC and The Hillier Group, NYC. He holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University and a Master’s in Architectural Engineering from Tehran University, Tehran, Iran. Majid has been a frequent guest critic at the Columbia and City University of New York Schools of Architecture.
NICHOLAS CHOW
designerA California native, Nick’s design is informed by his experience living, working and studying in the diverse climates of the San Francisco Bay Area, Baltimore, London and New York. Nick leads the New York City office of Shaw Jelveh Design and recently completed the design of the Green Building Certification Institute website and the environmental graphics program for the Ms. Foundation for Women. His prior experience ranges from packaging, signage and clothing graphics for Macy’s and Nautica Jeans Co., to the branding for San Francisco retailers and environmental graphics for the award-winning exhibition “At Freedom’s Door: Challenging Slavery in Maryland”. Nick’s personal work explores concepts of individual and group identity. Nick holds a BFA in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he graduated cum laude.
LEAH PREHN
designerLeah Prehn is the lead graphic designer at Shaw Jelveh Design, Baltimore. Since joining SJD in 2007, she has created environmental graphics for the U.S. Green Building Council headquarters and Pikesville Animal Hospital, branding for Stone Source and Roomtag, and extensive printed pieces for ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and the USGBC. Prior to Shaw Jelveh Design, Leah worked with Partner Concepts in Annapolis, Maryland to promote travel destinations around the globe, including the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Leah also brings environmental design experience from two years as a design and production assistant at Signcraft, Annapolis, producing work for clients such as the U.S. Naval Academy, the City of Annapolis and The Jewish Historical Society. Leah graduated magna cum laude from the Corcoran College of Art + Design with a degree in graphic design. Her work has been published in Communications Arts Magazine.
CURRENT DESIGN INTERNS
Andy Mangold
Andy, who began working with Shaw Jelveh in February of 2009, is a designer and web developer with an interest in printmaking. His work is published in Box Bottle Bag, Phaidon’s Compendium of Graphic Design, and Boxed and Labeled; he has been featured on numerous design blogs including The Dieline, Notcot, and iLoveTypography. He is currently studying Graphic Design at MICA with a concentration in book arts and plans to graduate in 2011.
Colin Dunn
Colin began working at Shaw Jelveh Design in October 2009. He is a graphic designer at the Maryland Institute College of Art with a background in web development. In the summer of 2007 he co-founded Artifex Productions, LLC with his twin brother and has since worked internationally to develop websites for dozens of organizations. Colin is a BFA candidate for 2012.
Aron Fay
Aron began working with Shaw Jelveh in January 2010. He is a practicing freelance graphic designer and printmaker specializing in print design and production. Aron's work has been exhibited in galleries and institutions such as The Current Gallery, The Athenaeum in Alexandria VA, Arizona State University, and the Maryland Institute College of Art. His work has also been featured on design blogs such as FormFiftyFive, TypoJungle, and Typo/graphic Posters . He is currently studying Graphic Design and Printmaking at MICA and is a BFA candidate for 2011.
